REMBAU: Police detained 19 National Service (NS) trainees who were involved in a fight at the Titian Bintangor camp canteen here on Saturday.

District police chief Deputy Superintendent Mizan Md Dom said the fight was between two groups of trainees aged between 17 and 22.

The cause of the fight has yet to be established. Six trainees suffered minor injuries to the faces, hands and fingers and were given outpatient treatment.

"We picked up the 19 youths involved in the fight after a report was lodged."

Mizan said the case had been classified as rioting, under Section 148 of the Penal Code and that the detainees had been remanded.

He said police had contacted the families of the detained trainees and they expressed dissatisfaction over how the camp management had dealt with the incident.

"They hoped the management would be more responsible and wise in solving problems at the camp to ensure such an incident will not recur."

The father of one of the detainees, Ng See Heong, 42, said his 18-year old son had called him about 4am yesterday to inform him that he was detained by the police.

"I was shocked and immediately rushed there. Other parents who were there also lodged a report over the camp's negligence in managing the programme."

Ng said his son had entered the camp two weeks ago and claimed that he was being bullied by other trainees.

"After he told me about the matter, he also informed the camp commander for action to be taken.

"The camp management should act swiftly and take the trainees' and their families' complaints seriously to avoid such an incident from happening."
