19 kematian, 21 cacat kekal sejak PLKN dilaksana

Harakahdaily,  26 Jun 2012

NS trainee’s death: ‘Zahid should take responsibility’

June 26, 2012

The defence minister should intervene and make sure the family gets adequate compensation.

KUALA LUMPUR: Defence Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi should intervene and make sure the family of A Tamilarasi – the National Service trainee who passed away during her training – get adequate compensation.

Batu Gajah MP, Fong Po Kuan, and Teluk Intan MP, M Manogaran, said that Zahid should take responsibility and based on compassionate grounds, compensation should be paid to Tamilarasi’s family.

“This family has allowed their daughter to participate after she was selected… her passing is a source of great grief to her family… the minister has to consider giving adequate compensation,” Fong told reporters in Parliament today.

Nineteen-year-old old Tamilarasi slipped into a coma after contracting viral fever and passed away a year later in April. She was the only child in her family.

On June 13, National Service director-general Abdul Hadi Awang Kechil said that the family will not be entitled for compensation as the group insurance only covered trainees who died while undergoing training.

He said Tamilarasi’s family received help while she was hospitalised.

He added that compensation can only be paid within seven days of an incident and since Tamilarasi’s death occurred a year after the infection, the insurance would not cover the case.

“Abdul Hadi’s explanation cannot be accepted and it does not inspire the confidence of parents to send their children for National Service,” Fong said.

Tamilarasi’s mother A Krishnamary has said that the family is entitled to compensation as her daughter fell ill during training and never recovered after that.

Family of NS trainee wants compensation over their suffering and loss

Tuesday June 12, 2012

NILAI: The parents of 19-year-old former National Service trainee A. Tamilarasi who died after falling ill during training want compensation.

Tamilarasi's mother, A Krishnamary, 41, said there had been no word from the authorities since her only daughter died on April 25.

“We borrowed money from relatives and friends when we had to attend to Tamilarasi who was in hospital for over a year.

“We hope the authorities will at least compensate us through the group insurance scheme,” she said at a memorial for her daughter.

Tamilarasi, a former student of SM Taman Desa Cempaka in Nilai, had reported at the PDS Resort NS camp in Pasir Panjang, Port Dickson on Jan 2, 2011 but fell ill a fortnight later.

Her lorry driver father K. Anandan, 42, who went to pick her up during the Chinese New Year break was shocked to see her condition and took her to a clinic.

She was later admitted to the Tuanku Ja'afar Hospital in Seremban where she slipped into a coma.

Anandan lost his job as he and his wife had to take turns to look after Tamilarasi, who died a year later without regaining consciousness.

Krishnamary said camp officials did give the family some cash.

“They gave us RM9,000 in instalments until July and another RM1,000 when my daughter died,” she said, adding that it costs the family RM200 a week to buy special formula and diapers for their daughter.

Krishnamary said her older son, who was planning to pursue tertiary education is now working as a clerk in a hotel while their youngest boy decided to stop schooling after PMR and is training to be a mechanic.

Krishnamary said her husband was also badly affected by Tamilarasi's death and could no longer perform heavy tasks.

“He earns between RM20 and RM30 on a good day selling ice cream. He has also been in poor health since our daughter died.”
